Please join us at Lightning Comics on Saturday the 17th of December (Noon to 3 pm) to celebrate the Dark Horse Comics debut of local artist Joshua Covey, with the release of House of Night #2!

Josh will be there to sign copies, and he and other members of the Guild will be on hand to draw free sketches for customers. We'll also have copies of our recently released Anthology Vol. 2 for sale (for which Josh did the cover), with contributors on hand to sign those as well.

Free Sketches and Comics Workshop!

We've got a couple of Guild related events coming up in the next week or so:

* This Saturday, October 29th, Guild members will be at Lightning Comics in Coeur d'Alene from Noon to 3 pm, drawing free sketches for customers as part of their Halloween weekend promotion. They will also have their annual costume contest at 1pm.

In addition, we'll have copies of the new Comicsmiths' Guild Anthology Vol. 2 for sale, with some of the creators involved on hand to sign the book!

* Then on Tuesday, November 2nd, Guild members will be heading up a Making Comics Workshop at the Lake City High School in Coeur d'Alene. The class is for Lake City High students, and will be in Room C-11, starting at 2:30 pm.

24 Hour Comic Book Day!

It's that time of year again! The 24 Hour Comic Challenge is fast approaching - this international event, now in it's 8th year, will be held October 1st - 2nd, 2011.

The Challenge is simple; you have 24 hours to create a 24 page comic - this means writing, drawing, lettering, all in one 24 hour period. This is the 5th year that the Challenge has been hosted in Spokane, and this time there will be two locations available for local participants.

The Comicsmiths' Guild will be hosting the Challenge, in a location that should be very convenient for those in the Spokane Valley area or coming from across the border in Idaho. You can RSVP at the Facebook event page: 24 Hour Challenge - Spokane Valley

The Valley Challenge will run from 8 am Saturday to 8 am Sunday, and will be held at:
Otis Orchard Community Church (Annex Bldg.)
23304 E Wellesley, Otis Orchards, WA 99027

In addition, Merlyns will be hosting the event downtown, starting at 10 am Saturday morning on the 1st and ending at 10 am the following Sunday. For more information you can check out their website at Merlyns.biz and RSVP at the Facebook event page: 24 Hour Challenge at Merlyns

Guild members will be in attendance at both locations, and there will be additional activities for attendees - we'll have updates on activities as more information becomes available. This is a kid-friendly, all-ages, event and all are welcome!

Our next monthly Guild meeting is this upcoming Sunday (the 21st), and is a barbeque at member Levi Skeen's home. He'll be providing burgers and hot dogs, so if you're planning to attend please bring a side and drinks. If you need directions or have questions, please contact the Guild - you can email us through the link found at the upper right of this page.

Next week will also see our third Spokane Drink & Draw of the year, brought to you by Cyrus O'Leary's and the Spokane Comicon! The event will be on Thursday evening (the 25th), from 7 - 11pm, and everyone is welcome. This will be in the regular restaurant area as opposed to the bar, so it will also our first all-ages Drink & Draw! You can RSVP at the Facebook event page: Spokane Drink & Draw Part Tres

Members are hard at work on their contributions to the Guild's second anthology comic, which we hope to release later this year. This will be a themed book, with a collection of scary and spooky tales. When we get closer to a firm release date, we'll have more information about it available here.

The Jet City Comic Show is coming up on September 24th in Seattle, and several Guild members will be in attendance as exhibitors. Confirmed so far are: Levi Skeen, Nathan O'Brian, Mike Lail and Erik Thompson.

And we are also happy to announce that the Guild will once again be present at the Emerald City ComiCon in Seattle! The convention is March 30 - April 1 2012, and we'll have a table in Artist Alley. ECCC is always a great event, and we're excited to be back!

Last, but certainly not least... a while back we decided to do a jam piece, with different people drawing various Green Lantern Corps members. They were pencilled separately by Guild members, and then assembled and finished by our resident inker extraordinaire, Levi Skeen. This was a lot of fun and everyone's really happy with how it came together. We hope to get this colored and available as a Guild-exclusive print, and also want to do more of these type of jam pieces in the future.

Spokane ComiCon!

Remember that Spokane ComiCon is this Saturday (the 21st) from 10 to 5, and the Guild will be extensively represented...

The Guild itself will have a spot in artist alley, where we'll have copies of the Comicsmiths' Guild Anthology book available for purchase, along with a selection of prints and original art from members. At the Guild table will be Matt Nelson, Mike Lail, Josh Montreuil and Peter Foglesong.
Levi Skeen will be at the Sketch Crew table in artist alley, alongside good friend of the Guild Ben "1314" Hansen.
Jesse Acosta will be in artist alley alongside Amanda Robinson, another satellite Guild member from Seattle.
Jeremy Whittington and Matthew Van Blaricom will be sharing a booth in the exhibitor's area, promoting their "SuperModels" and "Matt:IRL" comics.
Jay Gunter will be at the QEW Publishing booth, promoting his new novel, "Left Hand Tree."
Erik Thompson will be representing Wacom Technology, demoing products at their booth.
And local superstars Lars Brown and Joshua Covey will have their own tables in artist alley as well.

There will be plenty of other local artists and Guild associates there as well, including of course, Guild member Nathan O'Brien, the founder and head honcho of the Spokane ComiCon!

FCBD Wrap-Up

We wanted to give a big thanks to Matt at Lightning Comics, John at Merlyns, the management of Riverstone Theater and everyone who came out for Free Comic Book Day this year! We had great turn-outs at all locations, and kept busy the whole day, sketching away for people.

Free Comic Book Day!

This Saturday (May 7) is Free Comic Book Day, and the Guild will be present at local comic shops, sketching up a storm...

Members will be at Lightning Comics in Coeur d'Alene from 10:30 - 2:30, and then over at the Regal Riverstone theater from 4:30 - 6:30 drawing free Thor sketches for customers.

We'll also be over at Merlyns in Spokane from 11-2 doing free sketches for kids, as well as on the following Sunday at the same time. Along with sketches from the Guild, the Imperial 501st should be there from 1 -3 for photo ops and there will be a costume contest with prizes for kids and adults.

If you're not local, be aware that Free Comic Book Day is an international event, so you can check the FCBD website and find a participating retailer in your area. Otherwise, we hope to see you this weekend!

A reminder that this coming Saturday is the Superhero Storytime event at Aunties Bookstore, co-sponsored by the Spokane ComiCon. It's scheduled for 11 am in the children's section - there will be raffles, coloring pages for kids and even costumed superheroes for photo-ops!

Free Comic Book Day is right around the corner as well (May 7). The Guild will have several people drawing free sketches at both Lightning Comics in Coeur d'Alene and Merlyns in Spokane. We'll also be sketching Thor pics at the theater in Coeur d'Alene on Saturday evening. If you're in the area, please drop by and meet the Guild, and pick up a free comic and sketch!

After Free Comic Book Day, the next big event is the Spokane ComiCon on May 21st, which is organized and run by our very own Nathan O'Brien. This is a great convention, which is the only comic convention in the Inland Northwest and growing each year, and the majority of the Guild will be represented in Artist Alley. We look forward to seeing you there!

Novel Release - Left Hand Tree

Last night (April 2), Guild member J.D. Gunter hosted a release party for his debut novel Left Hand Tree at local comic store Merlyns. We had a great turnout, and Quenton Shaw (head of the publisher, QEW) even made the trip over from Seattle to manage the proceedings. Jay also did a live web-cast with a Q&A from viewers, which is now archived and available to view via the Ustream website, and is embedded below.

Left Hand Tree is about a young child in unthinkable circumstances and the very dangerous man who is his only hope of salvation. It is currently available online from QEW Publishing and as an e-book from Amazon and Barnes & Noble. You can also read sample chapters at LeftHandTree.com.

A reminder to everyone in the area - the Guild's next regular meeting is this coming Sunday (Feb. 20) at Merlyns, 3 pm. We'll be discussing plans and events, including the upcoming Emerald City ComiCon (March 4-6) and Spokane ComiCon (May 21).

How To Make Webcomics

So, Peter loaned me this last week and I totally forgot about it in my bag, but last night and today I skimmed through it (skipping mostly the technical parts about image formatting and things which I figured I would dink with later). Full disclosure, Peter: Tiger rubbed her face all over it while I was reading. I'm pretty sure that means it's hers now but I think I can sneak it back out of the house and distract her with Scott McCloud's Reinventing Comics.

It's a really good book for everyone who wants to think of their webcomic in terms of potential business and promotion. The four creators involved are the webcomics giants behind PvP, Starslip Crisis, Sheldon, and Evil, Inc. If anyone knows how to monetize and draw readership, it's these fellows, and they make a lot of really good points about the work, the sales, the cons, and even just how to be an approachable creator. I'd definitely say it's aimed more at people who produce the gag-a-day type strip rather than someone whose webcomic is aimed at telling long-form stories (such as Gunnerkrigg Court by Tom Siddell or our own Lars Brown's North World), but most if not all of the principles still apply.

I'd definitely recommend either finding a copy at your local library or buying one online or from your local comics distributor (it is published by Image comics).

I never really had an interest in doing a Red Sonja watercolor painting but after seeing some of the other memebers of the Spokane Comicsmiths' Guild post a few up I figured why not.

Originally I did a simple line art and scan to color it with GIMP on my computer, but I didn't like how it was looking. Since I did it on watercolor paper I went ahead and painted it. The entire piece took a couple hours to complete.

That's right folks, The ComicSmiths' Guild is producing an anthology! Expect to hear about Volume 1 anytime soon, the files are ready to go, and we are getting ready to send the book to the printer. 40 phenomenal pages! Unseen material anywhere else!

Once we have the books in our hands, we will give you ordering information so you don't have to wait to find us at a convention!

As for the cover itself, it's a jam collage consisting of characters from each of the ten different stories inside! This books has 13 sensational guild artists showcasing their amazing talents!

Not a huge fan of the "chicks in chainmail" genre; this was a challenge for me. Still, for an all-digital sketch I'm pretty happy with it.

24 Hour Challenge is Here!

It took me the whole week to finally draw a decent illustration of The Shadow. I couldn't get it right until my lunch break today at work! I like how the final result came out.

I can't wait to see what the other members have done with The Shadow. This was my choice last week, he's one of my top super heroes. I'm very curious to see what next week's character will be too!

For the upcoming 24 Hour Challenge event, I'm drawing up some pics to use as coloring pages for younger kids who aren't up to drawing a comic. Last year I did some Star Wars characters, and this year I'm going for superheroes.

I'm planning on adding a background to this one, but I figured I'd go ahead and post it now, as it can also double for my contribution as this week's #comicsmithsguild Weekly Sketch.

I did this for the Comicsmiths' Guild's group sketch. Hopefully if I don't screw up, people will be able to catch this one on their site also.

Basically I started with a very small sketch and scanned it into the computer and transferred it onto paper in light blue. Then I inked it with a ballpoint pen, and shaded it with both cool gray and warm gray copic markers.

Main Street Fair

A few updates to let you know where we'll be in the next month...

- This Saturday, the 11th, is the Sustainable September Main Street Fair. Members of the Guild will be set up outside of Merlyns drawing sketches for kids. The Fair runs from 1-6 pm.

- The next Guild meeting is on September 19th, at Merlyns at 3 pm. We'll be mainly discussing plans for the upcoming 24 Hour Comic Book Challenge.

- September 25th is the Jet City Comic Show in Seattle, and a few Guild members will be there individually. Nathan O'Brien will be in Artist Alley, Levi Skeen will be at the Strange Aeons booth alongside frequent collaborator and friend to the Guild Ben "1314" Hansen, and Erik Thompson will be at the Micro Brew Comics booth.

- The 24 Hour Challenge starts on October 2nd at 10 am and runs until the following morning. It'll be hosted at Merlyns, and everyone is welcome. More information about the event is available at the official 24 Hour Comic Site and we also have a Facebook Event Page.

CSG Anthology 2011

Just a small update for everyone. Just wanted to let you know we haven't been hibernating all summer, in fact we are madly working on an upcoming anthology for the humble Comicsmiths' Guild. Our deadline looms at August 20th, so there is still a month to put it together. The artists are clamoring to show off their talents with a 2 - 4 page short story each of their liking. Currently we have two submissions in, but word from the trenches is that there will be more pages coming our way.
Once compiled, we will be mailing it off to the printers. We hope for a late September/early August release. Perhaps we can do something like a release party or something. It will be nice to have a comic that all of us have worked on together; a product we can share at our comic events throughout the year.

Our meeting will be this 3pm, Sunday, the 25th of July at Merlyns in Spokane, WA. We will be discussing the anthology as well as the next 24 Hour Comic Book Challenge! All of us are stockpiling on stimulants to make it once again. This will be the 4th year for the challenge in Spokane, and because of the 24hr challenge we all met and founded the guild.

Art On The Edge 2010 Wrap-Up

Of all the events the Comicsmiths' Guild has been a part of, this has got to have been one of my favorites.

Art On The Edge, a nonprofit youth community art program in Coeur d' Alene, did a summer day camp with the theme of superheroes this year. The founders contacted a local comic shop, Lightning Comics, to see if they knew any comic book artists who could help with the program, and they put them in touch with our group.

For the last week, we got to teach four classes of kids per day about the ins and outs of making comics. We covered creating a character, coming up with a memorable name, designing an eye-catching cover, the importance of appropriate lettering, differing art styles, and ways to lay out a page.

There's something exhilarating about sharing knowledge with people who are genuinely interested in the topic at hand. Not only that, but kids have a tendency to create without a sense that their work is too absurd, or isn't right. We had kids with characters like The Human Strawberry, or one who could throw lizards. There was even one kid who created a character (whose name I wish I could recall) which was dressed in a rainbow-colored disco suit with a giant afro.

One of my favorite moments actually came as I was waiting to wash my hands in the bathroom on the first day. I was behind two little boys who were, as little boys will, taking too long to scrub up in the sink and making a giant mess, but they then started talking about how the comics class was next and it was their favorite. That was awesome.

This being the first time we've done this, there were of course hiccups. We ran out of some supplies, and one of the comics we brought for the kids from Free Comic Book Day needed to be replaced (Good one, Marvel!) but overall, things were really smooth.

The kids were also doing other things relating to superheroes all week, and at the end, they used their characters to create colorful costumes and put on a little skit. I filmed the whole thing, which was a lot of fun, and I hope to have some clips up on YouTube in short order.

I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone who helped to make this possible, and I apologize in advance to anyone who I've forgotten:

Rachel, Levi, Jay, Peter, Jesse, Erik, Lightning Comics in Coeur d' Alene, The Comic Book Shop in Spokane, and Ami and Jeni from Art on the Edge, give yourselves a big pat on the back. You guys all helped make a fantastic experience for kids.

Guild members will be teaching a class as part of the Art on the Edge program, showing kids how to make their own comics featuring superhero characters they've created.

Our monthly Guild meeting - this is regularly held on the 3rd Sunday of each month, but as this will be Father's Day weekend, and some members will be busy, we're waiting until the Sunday after. We'll update with more specifics soon.

Spokane ComiCon and More

Hello everyone!
Sorry, it's been a while since I've regularly updated the journal here. I've been busy getting ready for the convention. Just a heads up for everyone, here is this week's events!

TODAY (Sunday, May 16) 3PM - Merlyn's Comics and Games, W 19 Main, Spokane, WA
Meeting for the Comic Smiths Guild members. We will be talking about future events through the summer, and most importantly the Spokane ComiCon this Saturday.

Monday, May 17th - Spokane Community College Student Sketch Day, 1810 North Greene Street
Several of us guild members will be sketching from 11am until 2pm in the SCC Lair.

Saturday, May 22nd - Spokane ComiCon 2010 at SCC, 1810 North Greene Street
This is the big one for Spokane. The Guild will have a couple tables at the convention, stop and say hi. We will have art and comics up for sale! Lots of goodies, exclusive prints, and we will be doing sketch cards as well as larger commissions. Link to Spokane ComiCon's website: [link]

In preparation for the con, I have a painting I am painting specifically to sell at the con, friends who have seen it already want to buy it, or something similar. I should be finished tonight with it, I'll be posting it online here. I'm excited for that. Once the painting is done, I'll be jumping back on sketch cards. Free Comic Book Day (Lightning Comics) Wrap-up by Matt Nelson!

First of all, big shout out to Tim at Lightning Comics. He made the day a truly enjoyable experience for all, including really good chairs for all the artists. I didn't get numb-butt the whole time I was there. Then he brought COFFEE (insert heavenly chorus here). He also provided lunch for the guys.

From left to right, artists' perspective, we had Mighty Inker Levi Skeen, Mike "The Native American Ninja" Lail, me, Peter "Fight City" Foglesong, and newcomer (to our circle of nerds, anyway) Josh "Seriously, why isn't this guy drawing a book? I'd buy it" Covey.

Great times were had by all, I think, and it was busy from the get-go. We barely had time to breathe. It was nice to do a wide variety of sketches this time, as opposed to the first FCBD event I did, which was about 95% Star Wars characters. Not that I mind drawing Yoda, but it gets a little old.

Afterward we all browsed the comic freebies and exchanged various methods of contact, and then it was another Job Well Done, Lads, and drove home. Man I was exhausted though.

Can't wait for the next big event, which of course is the Spokane Comicon! Only five Washingtons gets you in the door for a conglomeration of geek awesome! Seriously, how can you say no? Take the kids and spend all the rest of that extra cash that you would have spent on an hour-and-a-half of forgettable 3D viewing on some things that'll create lasting memories. And help pay my bills. Ah-ha.

Free Comic Book Day!

The Comicsmiths' Guild will be on hand at local comic book stores this Saturday and Sunday to do free sketches for kids, as part of this year's Free Comic Book Day weekend.

On Saturday members will be at Lightning Comics in Coeur d'Alene, ID from 10:30 to 3, as well as Merlyns in Spokane from Noon to 4. The Guild will also be back at Merlyns on Sunday at the the same time.

Free Comic Book Day is a single day - the first Saturday in May each year - when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely FREE to anyone who comes into their stores. So drop by a local comic shop this Saturday, see what's happening in the world of comics and pick up some free books!

Many comic shops organize events, such as in-store creator signings or contests, to coincide with FCBD. So wherever you're at, be sure to check with your local shop and see what's happening. And if you're in the Spokane/CdA area, drop by and meet the Guild!

Emerald City Wrap-Up!

Emerald City ComiCon was awesome! And we wanted to say thanks to everyone who came by the Spokane Comicsmiths' Guild table, whether it was to buy something, commission a sketch or just hang out and chat. We met a lot of cool people, and ECCC always has such a fun and friendly atmosphere.

The Guild sold a bunch of sketches, sketch cards and prints, and a few books as well. You can see some of the sketches that artists did over on their deviantArt pages, as well as some photos from the weekend over on Jesse Acosta's deviantArt Journal.

We've got a ton of photos from the events, taken by different people, and once we get them all sorted and in one place we should have them posted up here along with everyone's sketches (the one's we were able to get pics of). Right now I think everyone's a bit exhausted from the event and just recuperating, but hopefully we'll get those up soon.

The next convention we'll be at is the Spokane ComiCon in May, and we'll have some other Guild events coming up as well, including sketching for Free Comic Book Day on May 1st at a couple of local comic stores.

If you're interested in learning more about the Guild, our next meeting is this Sunday at Merlyns from 3-6 pm, and we'll be discussing a lot of the plans for upcoming events. Any local artists and writers are welcome!

Emerald City ComiCon!

Just a reminder that Emerald City ComiCon is this weekend and the Guild will be at tables A-16/17. This is right up front, in the first block of Artist Alley.

We'll have mini-comics, prints and sketch cards for sell, and artists Jesse Acosta, Matt Nelson, Peter Foglesong and Zephan Osiris will be available for sketch commissions.

Right next to us (A-18/19/20) will be The Sketch Crew, which also features fellow Guild members Levi Skeen and Nate O'Brien.

Sketch Day Wrap-Up

A big thanks to the Spokane Community College for hosting the Comicsmiths' Guild at the Local Artists Sketch Day! We had a great turn-out, and actually ended up staying about a half an hour past our originally scheduled time because there were still people waiting in line for sketches and we didn't want anyone to leave empty-handed.

Five artists from the Guild were there drawing portraits and caricatures of students & staff, and we all had a lot of fun. If the college has another event like this, I'm sure we'd all love to come back to participate. Thanks, SCC!

Local Artists Sketch Day

This Wednesday, the 27th, the Spokane Community College will be hosting their Local Artists Sketch Day at the SCC Lair Student Center. Four members of the Guild will be participating:

Artists will be drawing sketches for students from Noon to 2 pm, so be sure to stop by, see some local Spokane artists, pick up a sketch and meet the Guild!

Emerald City ComiCon

The Emerald City ComiCon will be held in Seattle over the weekend of March 13th and 14th, and the Comicsmiths' Guild will be well represented there. The Guild will have a space in Artist Alley, and members will be selling comics, prints and original artwork. Artists will also be available for sketch commissions. Six members will be at the official Guild table throughout the weekend:

In addition to the above six "official" Guild representatives, other members of the Guild will also be at the convention:

24 Hour Comic Wrap-Up

We do a lot more than just hangout and talk shop. If you've caught us at different store functions or conventions, and wondered how are they doing that and can I get in on the action, come down to the meetings and learn how. All artists and writers are welcome.

Just a reminder that the 24 Hour Comic Book Challenge is fast approaching! The big day is less than a week away, and we want to encourage anyone who is considering attending to please RSVP, as we are expecting a big turnout and need to make sure there is enough table space available for everyone.

The 24 Hour Challenge will be starting at 10 am, Saturday, October 3 and will run until 10 am the following Sunday. The event will be hosted by Merlyns, and there will be additional activities for kids and those who are not taking part in the Challenge.

Street Fair Wrap-Up

The Comicsmiths' Guild wants to extend a big thank you to everyone who came down to the Main Street Fair on Saturday! A big thanks also to John and the crew from Merlyns for hosting us for the fair, as well as the upcoming 24 Hour Comic Book Challenge.

We were there talking up the 24 Hour Challenge, which seemed to generate quite a bit of interest, and this year will hopefully have our biggest turn-out yet! We're trying to get an approximate head count beforehand, so we can determine the amount of space we'll need. Thanks!

Spokane Street Fair!

Members of the Spokane Comicsmiths' Guild will be at Merlyns tomorrow (Saturday the 12th) after 3pm as part of the Sustainable September Main Street Fair!

We'll be drawing free sketches for kids between 4-6 and taking sketch commissions for others. There should also be a variety of prints and original artwork for sale as well. If you're a Spokane local, swing by and say Hi, meet the Guild and pick up some art!

In addition to the Guild, Merlyns will also be host to local members of the 501st Legion from 2-4pm. Get photos of yourself with stormtroopers and more of the Galactic Empire's finest!

The Street Fair will also feature live music, entertainment, sustainabilty info, kids activities, bike tune-ups, food and fun! In the street - 0 block of West Main, 3-8pm.

This blog will be updated with information related to the Spokane Comicsmiths' Guild and it's members. The Guild has regular monthly meetings, usually hosted at Merlyns, and anyone is welcome to attend. Please leave a comment here, or contact any of the members listed to the left for more information regarding meeting times or Guild events.

We will be participating in the Sustainable September Street Fair this Saturday, September 12. Guild members will be in front of Merlyns on Main Street after 3 pm, drawing free sketches for kids from 4 - 6 pm, taking commissions and selling prints and original artwork.

Most recently, Guild members were at Lightning Comics in Coeur d'Alene, ID on September 5th, drawing free sketches for customers as part of the store's Labor Day sales event. A few of the sketches from that are shown below.
